I've always said, "I was the third girl, supposed to be the boy." I grew
up in Newton, Iowa, which is about 30 minutes east of Des Moines.
Growing up, I spent many summers helping my father who is now a retired
brick mason. My home was constantly going through remodeling stages so I
was used to lots of power tools around.
I didn't seriously get interested in woodworking until my first year of marriage. I decided to build my husband a bookcase and recruited my father to help me out. That's when the fever hit me and by my next birthday I was asking for a router. I kept the Christmas building tradition alive for many years as it helped me develop my skills.
Creating projects for myself eventually turned into requests from other people to build projects for them. The biggest being several projects for our church's new addition. After completing a 6' long coffee cart and two cabinets, the support from my church family really helped boost business. Building custom pieces has been the backbone of my business. People call when they want a high quality piece or just something unique that no one else has.
In September (2005) a local lumber supplier, Lenny Reeder, asked if I'd like to round out his business, Logs To Lumber, by being an in-house woodworker. He primarily cuts trees from people's land, has it milled, and then kiln dries the lumber. He sells native wood to contractors and other woodworkers in the surrounding area. By combining our resources, it has allowed us to become a perfect combo. Our long term goal is to turn people's trees into heirloom furniture.
